About Somonauk

Somonauk is located equal distance from Aurora, DeKalb and Ottawa on the Route 34 corridor with easy access to a variety of major state interstate roads. One can travel quickly and easily to Chicago's O'Hare Airport, Rockford or Wisconsin. Somonauk's unique location has made it attractive to people with residential as well as commercial interests. Recognizing that growth is inevitable, the Village Board has enacted a policy of controlled growth proving for mixed-use annexation development.

Somonauk has an outstanding educational system, kindergarten through high school, a Baptist parochial school, and close by is a vocational school, two community colleges and Northern Illinois University.

Recreation facilities are abundant: Somonauk Community Park, an 11 acre multi-use park located within the municipality, DeKalb County Forest Preserve, campgrounds, swimming, and an 18-hole golf course. Three miles away is the home of the oldest and largest county fair in Illinois, and the most attractive and popular flea market for quality antiques. Also nearby is Starved Rock State Park, Shabbona State Park, Illinois River Waterways and several private airports.

For good living there are several housing developments located within a stone's throw of the village boundaries. Located within the village is a senior citizen retirement center, and nearby are two nursing homes, as well as a hospital.

The Somonauk Lion's Club, the GFWC Illinois Somonauk Junior Woman's Club and the GFWC Illinois DeKalb County Federated Woman's Club are very active volunteer community service organizations.

The Somonauk Golden Agers have monthly meetings with a potluck meal and entertainment. For boys and girls, an ambitious scouting program is available, as well as a progressive summer recreation program and fall AYSO soccer program.

The Somonauk Historical Preservation Committee compiles pictures and documents of homes and buildings from the past so that current and future residents of the village can share its interesting history. For more information, contact the village at 498-3500.
