Meeting Minutes
May 7, 2008
I. Call to order
President Bob Honkala called to order the regular board meeting of the Somonauk Business Organization at 7:07 A.M. on May 7, 2008 at the Country Kitchen Restaurant.
II. Roll call
Bob Honkala conducted a roll call. The following persons were present: President Bob Honkala (Bud’s Citgo), Treasurer Craig Johnson (Somonauk Insurance & Rex Agency), Director Adam Arriaga (Country Kitchen), Director Stacy Shim (Miller’s Foods), Bob Guehler (Lake Realty), Eric Honkala (Dekalb Street Floral), Debby Honkala (Dekalb Street Floral).
III. Approval of minutes from last meeting
Debby Honkala motioned to accept the minutes as emailed and mailed from the last regular board meeting. Seconded by Adam Arriaga. Motion Carried.
IV. Treasurers Report
Treasurer Craig Johnson reported a beginning balance in March 2008 as $3,868.78. A detailed report of the deposits and expenses was given. Craig reported that the April 2008 month end balance of the General Operating account was $4,767.78 and the April Month end balance of the Political Activities account was $529.00. Craig reminded members that the Cubs tickets were not yet paid for.
V. Approval of New Members
Bob Honkala requested approval of two new members. By a show of hands, Kettley Realtors and Paul Bruggeman & Son’s were welcomed as new members of the Somonauk Business Organization.
VI. Open issues
Roll Call Addition:
Pam Aloisio (Design Color Studio) enters meeting at 7:12 am.
a.) Bob Honkala and Stacy Shim reported for the Newsletter Committee. They received a bid from Wordcraft & Graphics Unlimited for creating an SBO newsletter. The estimated cost of the newsletter setup would be around $450.00 or about $50.00 per hour. Bob Guehler made a motion to accept the newsletter bid from Wordcraft & Graphics Unlimited. Seconded by Adam Arriaga. Discussion was held. Craig Johnson felt that the price should be negotiated. The words “negotiate price” were inserted into the motion. Motion Carried.
b.) Committee Chairman Adam Arriaga presented the Wrigley Field baseball trip committee’s information. Advertising the event was discussed and will be reviewed at a date closer to the time of the event. Debby Honkala requested that other businesses should have the ability to sell tickets. Businesses can pick up tickets from Craig Johnson at Somonauk Insurance and Rex Agency to sell.
c.) Adam Arriaga report on the Kelly Miller Circus. Discussion was held about possible locations. Bob Honkala reported that the Circus had a tentative date of late September. Craig Johnson motioned to accept the request of the Kelly Miller Circus to come to Somonauk pending a suitable location is found. Seconded by Bob Guehler. Motion Carried.
d.) Bob Honkala held discussion about the dumpster bids. He stated that there currently are twelve member businesses that were interested in obtaining bids for their dumpster service. The information will be presented to Community Disposal (Sandwich, IL), Complete Sanitation (Sheridan, IL), and Waste Management (Downers Grove, IL). Bob Honkala and Yong Shim will call a Special Meeting this month once all the bids are returned.
e.) Bob Honkala reported that Scott Merrill will be presented the idea of pony rides and/or a petting zoo for the Somonauk Summer Fest. No action will be taken until his response is received.
VII. New Business
A.) Bob Honkala formed 2008 nomination committee. It was then decided that no committee was needed and officer nominations would be made and voted on at the June 2008 meeting.
B.) Discussion was held about hosting a fundraiser similar to a “Drive thru Pork Chop Dinner.” Much discussion was held. Bob Honkala appointed a Drive thru dinner committee of Stacy Shim, Debby Honkala, and Pam Aloisio.
C.) Bob Honkala reported that the Village of Somonauk once again was discussing adopting business licenses. He will email members times and places of Village Board meetings so that members can attend.
D.) Bob Honkala reported that the Organization is still operating with a Secretary vacancy. The Secretary position remains vacant with Bob Honkala serving as acting Secretary. Interested parties should contact an SBO officer immediately.
E.) The Somonauk Village Board will be approached about the possibility of the Somonauk Business Organization purchasing and installing commercial hanging flower baskets for downtown lampposts and/or large commercial flowerpots for the sidewalks. Discussion was held about the Organization doing things like this to improve the image of the downtown area. Prices are being obtained.
VIII. Other Business
A.) There was no other business.
IX. Adjournment
Stacy Shim motioned to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Craig Johnson. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 A.M.
