Meeting Minutes
June 4, 2008
I. Call to order
President Bob Honkala called to order the regular board meeting of the Somonauk Business Organization at 7:05 A.M. on June 4, 2008 at the Country Kitchen Restaurant.
II. Roll call
Bob Honkala conducted a roll call. The following persons were present: President Bob Honkala (Bud’s Citgo), Vice President Yong Shim (Miller Foods), Treasurer Craig Johnson (Somonauk Insurance & Rex Agency), Director Adam Arriaga (Country Kitchen), Director Stacy Shim (Miller’s Foods), Director Pam Aloisio (Design Color Studio), Bob Guehler (Lake Realty), Eric Honkala (Dekalb Street Floral), Debby Honkala (Dekalb Street Floral), Cori Mander (Citizen’s First National Bank), Cheryl Barry (The Baker’s Basket).
III. Approval of minutes from last meeting
Bob Guehler motioned to accept the minutes as emailed and mailed from the last regular board meeting. Seconded by Craig Johnson. Motion Carried.
IV. Treasurers Report
Treasurer Craig Johnson gave a detailed report of the deposits and expenses. Craig reported that the May 2008 month end balance of the General Operating account was $4,647.78 and the April Month end balance of the Political Activities account was $529.00.
V. Approval of New Members
There were no new members to approve at this time.
VI. Open issues
a.) Committee Chairman Adam Arriaga presented the Wrigley Field baseball trip committee’s information. Adam stated that he would like for the event to be advertised in the Valley Free Press. Stacy Shim motioned that the Cubs bus trip flyer would be published in the Valley Free Press News. Adam Arriaga Seconded. Motion Carried. Craig Johnson reported that there are 66 tickets remaining to sell.
b.) Bob Honkala reported on the newsletter. He stated that any articles that are being written for the summer newsletter should be submitted to Stacy Shim, preferably by email (Stacyshim22@hotmail.com). Advertising will be at the bottom of each page of the newsletter and will be sold for $10. All business will be approached for advertising opportunities and to obtain logos.
c.) Bob Honkala reported that the dumpster bids have come in and Complete Sanitation out of Sheridan has won the bid. It was reported that it could save one business in town over $3000.00 per year. Bob Honkala and Yong Shim will present the local businesses with their bids and have Complete Sanitation contact them.
d.) Adam Arriaga briefly spoke about the Kelly Miller Circus. He stated that we had no location for the circus within our organization and we needed the designated location prior to committing to the circus. Debby Honkala suggested that the Somonauk Community Park be considered. Bob Honkala will send an email to the Village requesting the use of the park.
e.) Bob Honkala reported that the Village had come up with an alternate copy of the Business License Ordinance. The Village Board has not yet seen the new version and will not be voting on the Ordinance in their June meeting. Bob Honkala stated that a copy of the revised Ordinance would be attached to the emailed minutes. Dates for a meeting with the Village are being discussed. Bob Honkala encouraged businesses to read over the revised Ordinance and report concerns back to him. Bob Honkala thanked all that were at the meeting representing our Organization.
VII. New Business
A.) Nominations of officers for a one-year term from June 2008 through May 2009 were discussed. A slate of officers was formed and accepted by a verbal agreement. Eric Honkala motioned for the following slate: President: Bob Honkala, Vice President: Yong Shim, Treasurer: Craig Johnson, Secretary: Adam Arriaga, and Directors: Stacy Shim, Pam Aloisio, Bob Guehler Cheryl Barry. Seconded by Bob Guehler. Motion Carried.
B.) Discussion was held about hosting a drive thru rib eye steak sandwich dinner. The dinner will be held on either June 30 or July 14. Bob Honkala will obtain prices for tickets. The drive thru will be held between Miller’s and Somonauk Insurance pending Village approval.
***Roll call adjustment. Craig Johnson exits meeting at 7:48 a.m.
C.) Downtown hanging plants and banners were discussed. Bob Honkala reported that Seneca Business Association was able to obtain banners for $110 per banner. The business logo would be printed on the bottom of the banner. Business members will be contacted to see who would be interested in the purchase of a banner at or around $110. The SBO agreed to pay for the hanging flowerpots which will be strategically located at major intersections. Yong Shim motioned to buy hanging flowerpots and brackets not to exceed $1000.00. Seconded by Eric Honkala. Motion Carried.
D.) An SBO member’s cookout was briefly discussed. More details will come at a later date.
VIII. Other Business
A.) Debra Collins of Lake Holiday has expressed interest in joining the SBO as a volunteer. She submitted a resume and may be invited to the July board meeting.
IX. Adjournment
Adam Arriaga motioned to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Yong Shim. Meeting adjourned at 8:11 A.M.
